Rabindranath Tagore’s Descendants

Rabindranath Tagore’s Descendants

During the course of our two most recent conference calls, we had some discussions, among various other issues, about Rabindranath’s children and his grandchildren.  I have gathered some basic information on this topic, and for everyone’s ease of reference I furnish my findings below.  Please note that this is by no means a scholarly article on the subject, but rather a compilation of some straightforward facts.

Rabindranath Tagore’s Birth and His Death

Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta (Kolkata) in the ancestral home of the Tagores at 6 Dwarkanath Tagore Lane, Jorasanko on Tuesday, 7 May 1861 between 2.30 and 3.00 a.m.; corresponding to Monday, 25 Boishaakh 1268 Bengali Era.

Tagore was brought to Kolkata from Santiniketan for Medical treatment on 25 July 1941, and he remained in Kolkata for the last two weeks of his life.  He dictated his last poem on 30 July 1941, and died at the age of 80 Years 3 Months in the family house at Jorasanko in Kolkata on Thursday, 7 August 1941, shortly after 12.00 noon; corresponding to Thursday, 22 Sraabon 1348 Bengali Era.

Rabindranath Tagore’s Wedding and His Wife’s Subsequent Death

Rabindranath was married at the age of 22 years 7 months, and his wife Bhabatarini Debi was about ten years of age at the time of their wedding; which took place in the ancestral house of the Tagore family at Jorasanko (not in the bride’s home) on 9 December 1883.  Rabindranath’s father, his second brother Satyendranath Tagore and eldest sister Saudamini Debi were not present at the wedding.  Saudamini Debi's husband Saradaprasad Gangopadhyay died on Rabindranath's wedding day.

Bhabatarini Debi was born in the year 1873 at Fultala, a village in the district of Jessore, in East Bengal (present day Bangladesh).  Her father, Benimadhab Raychaudhuri, was a minor employee on the Tagore Estates.  The name Bhabatarini was considered an old fashioned one by the members of the Tagore family, and consequently, her name was changed to Mrinalini Debi, which was suggested by Rabindranath’s eldest brother Dwijendranath Tagore (1840 – 1926).

Mrinalini Debi fell ill in the year 1902 while she was residing at Santiniketan.  She was later brought to Calcutta for medical treatment but, the doctors could not diagnose her illness.  Rathindranath Tagore later speculated that his mother had appendicitis.  She remained unwell for three months, and eventually died on 23 November 1902 at the age of about 29 Years.  Rabindranath was 41 years 6 months of age when his wife Mrinalini Debi died.  After his wife's demise, Rabindranath never remarried.

Rabindranath Tagore’s Children

Rabindranath Tagore and Mrinalini Debi had five children - three daughters and two sons - and they were: Madhurilata Debi (Bela), Rathindranath Tagore (Rathi), Renuka Debi (Rani), Mira Debi (Atasi) and Samindranath Tagore (Sami). Three of Rabindranath's children died by the time he was 57 years old but, he did not adopt any other children.

Madhurilata Debi (Bela)

Rabindranath’s first child Madhurilata, who was his eldest daughter, was born on 25 October 1886.  She was also known as Bela.  Rabindranath sometimes mentioned her name as ‘Beli’ in his letters to his family members.

Madhurilata was married at the age of fifteen to Saratchandra Chakraborty (the third son of the poet Biharilal Chakraborty) in July(?), 1901.  Madhurilata’s husband was a lawyer.

Madhurilata died of tuberculosis at her husband’s house in Calcutta on 16 May 1918 at the age of 31 years 6 months.  She did not have any children.

Rathindranath Tagore (Rathi)

Rabindranath’s second child Rathindranath Tagore, who was his eldest son, was born on 27 November 1888.  Rathindranath was married on 27 January 1910 to Pratima Debi.  Pratima Debi was born in the year 1893.  At the time of their marriage, Rathindranath was 21 years 2 months of age and Pratima Debi was about 17 years of age.

Pratima Debi was Gaganendranath and Abanindranath Tagore’s niece. (Her mother Binayini Debi was their sister).  Before her marriage to Rathindranath, Pratima Debi had been married to Nilanath Mukhopadhyay but, was widowed later.  Rathindranath and Pratima Debi’s marriage was the first instance of a widow marriage in the Tagore family.

Rathindranath and Pratima Debi did not have any children.  However, they adopted a daughter called Nandini, who was born in the year 1922.  Sometime after Tagore’s death, Rathindranath and Pratima debi separated.

Rathindranath was the Vice Chancellor of Visva-Bharati University from 14 May 1951 till 22 August 1953.  He died in Dehradun on 3 June 1961 at the age of 72 years 6 months.  Pratima Debi died in the year 1969 when she was about 76 years old.

Renuka Debi (Rani)

Rabindranath’s third child Renuka, who was his second daughter, was born on 23 January 1891.  She was also known as Rani.  She was married to Satyendranath Bhattacharya in August(?) 1901, about one and a half months after her elder sister Madhurilata got married.  At the time of her wedding, Renuka was about 10 years 6 months of age.  She died of tuberculosis in mid-September 1903 when she was about 12 years 7 months of age.  Renuka did not have any children.

Mira Debi (Atasi)

Rabindranath’s fourth child Mira Debi, who was his third and youngest daughter, was born on 12 January 1894.  She was also called Atasi.  Mira Debi was married on 6 June 1907 at the age of 13 years 4 months to Nagendranath Gangopadhyay.  They separated in the 1920s.  Mira Debi died at Santiniketan in the year 1969 at the age of about 75.

Mira Debi and Nagendranath had two children – a son named Nitindranath (Nitu) and a daughter named Nandita (Buri).

Samindranath Tagore (Sami)

Rabindranath’s fifth child Samindranath, who was his second and youngest son, was born on12 December 1896.  He was also called Sami.  Less than six months after Mira Debi’s wedding, while Samindranath was visiting a friend at Munger in the state of Bihar, he suddenly died of cholera on 23 November 1907, the day his mother Mrinalini Debi died five years before.  At the time of his death, Samindranath was 10 years 11 months of age.

Rabindranath Tagore’s grandchildren

Rabindranath had three grandchildren – one grandson and two granddaughters – and they were Nitindranath, Nandita and Nandini.

Nitindranath Tagore (Gangopadhyay) [Nitu]

Mira debi’s only son, and Rabindranath’s only grandson, Nitindranath was born in the year 1912.  He was also called Nitu.  While he had been residing in Germany for higher studies, he died of tuberculosis on 7 August 1932 at the age of 20.  Nitindranath was not married.  At the time of Nitindra’s death Rabindranath was 71 years of age.

Nandita Kripalani (Buri)

Mira Debi’s only daughter Nandita was born in 1916.  She was also known as Buri.  She was married to Krishna Kripalani (1907 – 1992).  They did not have any children.  Nandita died in 1967 at the age of 51.

Nandini Tagore

Rathindranath and Pratima Debi’s adopted daughter Nandini was born in 1922.  She was married on 30 January 1939. (I do not have any more information about her).

Conclusion

From the information presented above we see that only two of Rabindranath Tagore’s children – his son Rathindranath and daughter Mira Debi – and two of his granddaughters, Nandita (Mira Debi’s daughter) and Nandini (Rathindranath’s adopted daughter), outlived him, and it is sad to note that no direct descendant of Rabindranath is alive any more.

NB:

1. If anyone has any more information about Rathindranath’s adopted daughter Nandini, for example, to whom did she get married, whether she is still alive, if not then when did she die, did she have any children, and what were their names etc.; then please enlighten us all.

2. If anyone notices any factual errors in this article, please provide the correct information, mentioning the sources.  Please do not ignore any mistakes.

3. I could not find the exact dates of some of the events, and in such cases I have indicated only the years when those incidents happened.  If anyone knows the exact dates, please share those information with everyone.

Why the fairer sex is also the tougher one: Women have superior systems to men

Why the fairer sex is also the tougher one: Women have superior systems to men

For centuries they’ve been labeled as the weaker sex.

But when it comes to the battlefield of illness and infections, women are far more robust than their male counterparts.

For it appears Mother Nature has given women a superior immune system, enabling them to fend  off germs that leave men struggling to cope.

Feeling fit: Women may be called the fairer sex but in fact they have much more robust immune systems
Feeling fit: Women may be called the fairer sex but in fact they have much more robust immune systems

According to a study, the fairer sex is genetically programmed to better resist infections and cancer, and also has a back-up system for fighting disease.

The discovery also suggests that males who regularly complain of ‘man-flu’ may not be exaggerating after all.

The secret to women’s stronger immunity lies in a key biological difference between the sexes. Women have an extra copy of the female X-chromosome, while men have only one and a much smaller Y-chromosome.
This means women have greater access to molecules called microRNAs, which are encoded on the X-chromosome. These tiny strains of ribonucleic acid are regarded as major regulators of the immune system.

Dr Claude Libert, from Ghent University in Belgium, led the research which drew up a detailed map of all the microRNAs in X-chromosomes found to have a role in immune functions and cancer.

He said: ‘Statistics show that in humans, as with other mammals, females live longer than males and are more able to fight off shock episodes from sepsis, infection or trauma.

‘We believe this is due to the X-chromosome, which in humans contains ten per cent of all microRNAs detected so far in the genetic code.’ Several of these are thought to have ‘important functions in immunity and cancer’, he said.

Dr Eleanor Fish, professor of women’s health and immunobiology at the University of Toronto, said of the findings in the BioEssays journal: ‘The advantages of having two X-chromosomes as opposed to an X- and a Y-chromosome are huge.

‘MicroRNAs are very important for regulating proteins that would influence cell growth and cancer, and the immune response.

‘They can suppress proteins that promote cancer and boost proteins that do the opposite.’

If women develop a mutation on a gene linked to the immune system on the X-chromosome, they have a backup copy. But men do not.

From a biological point of view, she added, the difference has probably evolved because women are more likely to ensure the survival of a species.
They need to be able to resist infection when pregnant and when nurturing the child.  ‘You don’t need many men to keep the human race going but you need females,’ she said.

However, there is a downside to a woman’s super immunity, said Dr Fish: ‘It favors resistance to infection with a more robust immune response but once you have got infection then it can result in a more severe inflammatory response.

‘This means women are more likely to develop autoimmune diseases and they may suffer flu more badly than men.’

Good Morning ..... ((*_*))

A Great thinker was Asked.....

What is the Meaning of Life ?
He Replied - Life it self has no Meaning..
" Life is an Opportunity " to create a Meaning.

"The Doctor Who Was In A Hurry"

This is shared by one of my best friend….really touchy and have lot to learn from it

Greetings to you this Morning……

"The Doctor Who Was In A Hurry"

A doctor entered the hospital in hurry after being called in for an urgent surgery. He answered the call asap, changed his clothes and went directly to the surgery block. He found the boy's mother going and coming in the hall waiting for the doctor. On seeing him, the mother yelled:

"Why did you take all this time to come? Don't you know that my son's life is in danger? Don't you have the sense ...of ...responsibility?"

The doctor smiled and said:

"I am sorry, I wasn't in the hospital and I came the fastest I could after receiving the call…… And now, I wish you'd calm down so that I can do my work"

"Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now, would you calm down? If your own son dies now what will you do??" said the mother angrily.

The doctor smiled again and replied: "I will say what Job said in the Holy Book "From dust we came and to dust we return, blessed be the name of God". Doctors cannot prolong lives. Go and intercede for your son, we will do our best by God's grace"

"Giving advice when we're not concerned is so easy" Murmured the mother.

The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happy, "Thank goodness!, your son is saved!" And without waiting for the mother's reply he carried on his way running. "If you have any question, ask the nurse!!"

"Why is he so arrogant? He couldn't wait some minutes so that I ask about my son's state" Commented the mother when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left.

The nurse answered, tears coming down her face: "His son died yesterday in a road accident, he was in the burial when we called him for your son's surgery. And now that he saved your son's life, he left running to finish his son's burial."
Moral:- Never Judge Anyone Because You never know how their life is & what they're going through!

29 life lessons learned in travelling the world for 8 years straight

29 life lessons learned in travelling the world for 8 years straight

Eight years. That’s 416 weeks, or almost 3,000 days. This is the amount of time that I have not had a fixed home; moving to a new country, culture and language every few months and taking absolutely everything I own with me. It has been a significant percentage of my life, and it’s still long from over.

I had actually done some travelling before - a couple of summers in the states, and an entire month already in Spain. But about this time back in 2003, on the week of my 21st birthday, I left Ireland for good. I had graduated university a few days before, and knew that I’d only be coming back “home” for visits (I’ve never once missed the family Christmas dinner). But it’s not really my home any more. Since then, “wherever I lay my hat, that’s my home”.
After devoting my life to them, university and schools had taught me nothing of any real importance. I had gone through as many books as I could and thought I knew it all, but the fact of the matter is that I have become the person I was meant to be in the last 4/5 of a decade, while on the road. And I certainly still have a lot left to learn.
[Edit: People keep asking me how I can afford a travel lifestyle for so long, or if I'm rich or if my parents paid for everything. I paid for the entire trip myself, starting with no moneysaved up; I can assure you my lifestyle is way cheaper than most settled people who prove observation #10 and need so much money to buy rubbish!
You don't need to be rich to travel the world. To find out more about me and my story, please read my site's About page to see a list of the many jobs I've had during my travels. For just the last one year I've been earning money by helping people to hack languages quicker.]
Since yesterday was my 29th birthday and this week is my 8 year “travelversary”, I thought it fitting to share 29 of these revelations with you of things that I have learned on this journey. Many of them are about life in general, but these are actually my observations after meetingmany people from all over the world:

1. Everyone everywhere basically wants the same thing

Vastly different as the world’s cultures are, if you speak to Italian millionaires, homeless Brazilians, Dutch fishermen and Filipino computer programmers, in their own languages, you start to see that we are all incredibly alike where it matters.
Everyone just wants validation, love, security, enjoyment and hopes for a better future. The way they verbalise this and work towards it is where things branch off, but we all have the same basic desires. You can relate to everyone in the world if you look past the superficial things that separate you.

*HOROSCOPE AUGUST 18 2012*_*

You have a natural sense of what people want versus their needs. Writing, music and cooking can be a part of much creative satisfaction--and income.

You combine passion and courage with ambition and self-control to meet your goals today. You can accomplish much through careful, hard work. If you are working today, you will find that people are more grateful than usual. You are careful to demonstrate the safest way to clean and store the products you sell. Business, professional, financial, legal and educational endeavors are favorable. Travel at this time can be adventurous and culturally rewarding. You have a lot of enthusiasm for improving your surroundings or life situations. You are very motivated to improve or widen your scope of education and experience. You are a very sensitive person who can depend on feelings and intuition to get around in life. Possessing good common sense, you are very down-to-earth--nurturing and protective to all. Others appreciate you more than you realize.

Your vitality and sense of optimism are strong and you can take constructive action to expand your financial, professional or educational endeavors. You may swing a good deal on an important purchase today. This is a favorable time for adventurous travel, sports, the out-of-doors and contact with foreigners. There are favorable aspects for cultural and legal matters as well. You have a knack for finding assistance in whatever career moves you make. In fact, your ability to rally support makes a public career of one kind or another quite probable. At home, you are interested in building permanent relationships or providing for a home and family. Entertainment tonight may involve your talents or the talents of someone you love.

If you are working today, this is a secure period where you can make steady progress toward your career and social goals. You can develop the confidence, honesty, maturity and self-respect that can make you better able to handle authority and responsibility. This is a favorable time for learning new duties, putting a polish on old talents and perhaps, travel related to your work. Your community spirit may come into play. There is a feeling of being a part of the bigger picture that encourages you to move forward with political issues. You are very communicative, not just a little curious--conversations come easily. Family is important to you and you may find yourself enjoying an out-of-doors get-together this evening with the family and even a few friends.

Seek constructive outlets for physical energies in exercise, games, cleaning and repairs around the house. You can tend to be careless, overindulgent or take unnecessary risks today--careful. Avoid buying on impulse. Use moderation in business, legal, cultural or religious activities. This may be a good time to reorganize a closet. You are apt to take more pride in your home and in your roots or heritage at this time. You take a nurturing and supportive role toward others, especially children, who bring a great deal of emotional contentment and happiness your way. This evening, neighbors, or brothers and sisters, will likely bring all kinds of experiences your way. There is a chance to have a special time with someone you love this evening.

The tragic circumstance under which Assam is passing through is a matter of grave concern for all countrymen. The RSS expresses its deep anguish over the pain, sufferings and losses faced by the people of Assam in the recent outburst of violence in Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) and Dhubri. The fact that a large number of people have been killed, many are injured and lakhs have been rendered homeless due to loot and arson shows that the situation is alarming. It is an irony that people have to live in refugee camps in their own country because of hostilities from foreigners.

The RSS also is pained to know that a large number of students and young employees of NE states in several parts of our country are returning to Assam and other North-eastern states in an atmosphere of fear and threat.

The present situation in Assam that erupted on 20 July is not an isolated or sudden one, but it is another episode in the series of such violent incidents took place earlier. There have been skirmishes and conflicts leading to wide spread violence in the past due to a large presence of illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators.

Tensions between Bangladeshi Muslim and local communities have prevailed in the region for many years now. In this context, we can quote several incidents, the Idgah incident at Fakiragram being the recent one, or the Udalguri violence four years back. The ever increasing number of Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators has not only disturbed peace and amity in the region but created socio-economic and political problems also. The people of Assam and other NE states are well aware of this as they are experiencing it. Time and again, various organisations have raised the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration and demanded from the Govts-both state and union-to put a halt to this vexed problem. At the national level RSS and many others have also been voicing the same opinion for last three decades. But unfortunately, these demands have met with no tangible solution.

It has been the considered opinion of RSS on the basis of ground realities that the frequent outburst of violence is due to this conflict between the Indian citizens of Assam /NE and the illegal infiltrators.

The recent violent incidents in Mumbai point to the fact that the situation has taken alarming proportion and different dimension. The Mumbai incident and also the attack on students at Pune deserve to be condemned by all. Such violent eruptions have been witnessed at Ranchi also. Considering these developments, there appears to be a larger conspiracy to create tension and spread violence in other parts of the nation. It is for all to see that the situation is kept under control.

There is a complaint by visitors that many people in the relief camps where Muslims are taking shelter, are not coming from the villages which have faced violence. I demand the Govt. authorities to enquire into this and take necessary steps as per the situation.

The swayamsevaks of RSS, and organisations inspired by the Sangh, have rushed to the relief work soon after the violence erupted. Our Swayamsevaks are rendering succor to the affected people in the Bodo areas. They are working in more than 60 camps, providing food provisions, cooked food, medicine, cloths, utensils and other needs. Teams of Medical Doctors from Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh visited the area for three weeks and rendered medical aid. More works of relief and rehabilitation are being contemplated.

Workers of RSS have met NE students and others at Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kerala, Hyderabad, Delhi etc. and offered all help for their safety and security. Also, they have announced help line nos. Food and security have been provided enroute by Sangh, ABVP, BJP and others to these youth who are travelling by trains to Assam.

The current problem is the result of the tension between the local communities who are genuine citizens of the nation and the Bangladeshi Muslims who are illegal migrants. The RSS demands from the Govt to implement all effective steps immediately to curb the infiltration from Bangladesh and to detect them here, delete their names (from electoral lists), and to deport back in order to put a permanent halt to this problem. Also, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) should be prepared without further delay and non-citizens should be treated accordingly.

The RSS appeals to the general public of NE and also throughout the country to maintain total peace and amity by all efforts. It is extremely necessary to keep vigil that nobody misuses the situation and no tension or provocation is created in any part of the country.

The RSS also assures all help, safety and security to our brethren of Assam & other NE States living or studying in other parts of the country. We appeal to them not to panic; however, we appeal to them to contact local RSS or ABVP offices at any place for any help. The people of Assam and NE are not alone but the entire country is with them at this hour of distress.
